Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at Eastern Michigan University.  We're proud to offer a wide variety of programs including mathematics, statistics and programs for prospective elementary and secondary teachers.  In addition, you will find a number of interdisciplinary programs including our actuarial and bioinformatics programs and, at the graduate level, the masters in mathematics with a concentration in computer science. More recently, we've expanded the graduate program to include mathematics education. In the Department of Mathematics, you'll find that our faculty genuinely care about your learning. In addition to a variety of challenging upper level courses in mathematics and statistics, our developmental mathematics program offers a supportive learning environment for students who struggle with mathematics. You'll find alumni from our department teaching mathematics, continuing their studies in graduate school, and employed in a variety of careers.

There are a number of ways to be involved in our department whether through competitions, tutoring, or collaborating with faculty on research projects. We regularly have teams of students participating in the National Mathematics Modeling Competition. Another group of students prepares for the Putnam exam on Friday afternoons in the fall semester. And other students participate in an afternoon math club for a neighboring elementary school.

We have fun, too. On March 14th of each year we celebrate pi day by eating pie and listening to a brief history of pi. The highlight is always when Dr. Folk recites the first 300 decimal places of pi. Yes, he has it memorized and you might want to watch the video of Dr. Folk.

We award a number of scholarships. Applications for scholarships are available online or in the Department of Mathematics.  Each spring, the Department of Mathematics hosts an awards ceremony in which students are recognized for their achievements in mathematics and scholarship recipients are honored.
